Blood Rock 100

The 100 Mile Race - The Last Annual BR 100

No, It’s really the last!

It was a difficult decision. We had hoped from the first BR100, 10 years ago, to have the Blood Rock 100 be a qualifier for the Hardrock 100. HR only has two qualifiers east of the Rockier. There is one basic problem with Blood Rock being a qualifier. Double Oak Mountain in Oak Mountain State Park is 650 ft. tall. HR requires any qualifier to have at least one 2,000 ft. climb. We looked into the possibility of building a 1,400 foot tower on top of the mountain with stairs going all the way to the top, but the park would never approve it. Of course, with Birmingham being a mining town, we could have had an incline mine shaft dug down 1,400 ft. but what would we have done with all the dirt and rock we dug up. We gave up!

Blood Rock 100 is a Southeastern Trail Runs race. The race will take place at Oak Mountain State Park, starting and ending at the Cabins on Tranquility Lake. The 100 Mile Race will start at 12:00 Noon Friday. Aid stations distances range from 5 to 8 miles apart. The Cutoff for the 100 Mile Race will be 44 Hours. The 100 course is three laps of the 34.5 mile, 55K course. Due to the extremely difficult and remote nature of the backcountry sections of Blood Rock, we must enforce mandatory cutoffs.

The Blood Rock 34.2 Mile Loop GPX File

Almost every year at Blood Rock, people mess with flags and signs. last year, two days before the race, all the signs at a major intersection were thrown out into the woods. The next day, over a mile of flags and signs were pulled and thrown in the woods. Oh, and one rather critical signs was reversed potentially sending runners miles in the wrong direction. I had several game cameras on the course, one actually on the Green Trail where all the flags were pulled. Of course, that’s the one that didn’t work. I have more cameras this year but don’t take chances. Download the Gaia App to your phone. Then load the GPX file to the Gaia App. Although GPS navigation in the woods isn’t prefect, it’s good enough to keep you on the correct trail. Download the app in advance and practice with it. Make a GPX file of one of your standard training runs. Send the file to your phone in an email. Open the GPX file in the email and send it to the Gaia App. Run with it. See how it shows your location in relation to the downloaded course. You do not need any cell reception to use the app.

You will not get lost at Blood Rock.

The Runners manual is now available for this years race. It is a good idea to download the complete manual and read it. The Manual has much more detailed race information than does the website.
